This works fine for most of us as we usually want to save the file in the Downloads folder. But if you wish, you can make Edge display the Save as Download Prompt, where you are asked if you want to Save or Save As.
If you select Save, the file will automatically get downloaded to your default Download folder. If you select Save As, you will see the usual Explorer dialog box, which asks you for the name and download save location.
Enable Save As Download Prompt in Edge
Microsoft Edge (Chromium) by default, saves all files you choose to download to the ‘Downloads‘ folder of your PC. You can change this by enabling the ‘Save As‘ prompt. When you enable ‘Save As‘ dialog, you will see the usual Explorer dialog box, which asks you for the name and download save location.
1] Go to Downloads
Launch Edge browser, navigate to ‘Settings and more‘ and choose ‘Settings‘.
From the ‘Settings‘ panel displayed on the left, select ‘Downloads‘.
2] Enable ‘Ask where to save each file before downloading’ option
When selected, in the right-pane you’ll see the following option – ‘Ask where to save each file before downloading‘. Simply, toggle this switch to enable ‘Save As‘ prompt.
Hereafter, whenever, you download something, ‘Save As‘ prompt will appear on screen as shown in the image above. If you wish to use the Registry method, create a system restore point first and then do the following. Type regedit in Taskbar search and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor. Now navigate to the following key:
Now in the left pane, right-click on MicrosoftEdge and select New > Key. Name this new Key as ‘Download’.
Now click on this Download key, and then right-click inside the right side pane. Select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name this newly created DWORD value ‘EnableSave Prompt’. Next, double-click on EnableSavePrompt and give it a value of 1. Now when you download any file from the Internet, your Edge browser will ask you if you want to Save or Save As a file. To reverse the changes, you may change the value of EnableSavePrompt from 1 to 0, or simply delete the Download key. That’s it!
